Student Handbook

Dear Students,

Welcome to the Peres Program! You are now part of an elite group of students, selected because you have exhibited the potential to be a future leader and influencer in our community. We know you are joining our program in addition to your many other commitments; please take a few moments to look over this handbook so you are aware of all future times, dates, and program expectations. This will enable you to make the most of our program!

Our time together is short. In order to gain the most from Peres, you are required to be at all meetings. All sessions begin and end promptly.
Should extenuating circumstances occur, please contact Sara as soon as you are aware that you are unable to attend. Consistent absences may unfortunately result in dismissal from the program.

Light refreshments are served at each meeting.

Curriculum and Final Project

Before each of the 6 meetings you will receive a short booklet containing stories, video links, and newspaper clippings. Please read the booklet before each meeting. At the end of each booklet are questions which ask you to thoughtfully consider and discuss what you have just read. Answers should be turned in at the meeting. These answers are evaluated in order to choose the Certificate of Distinction winner at the end of the program. Consideration is also given to those who hand in their answers on time. Typing answers is not necessary as long as handwriting is easily legible.

Answers are evaluated on a 3 point system:
0 = no answer/shows very little effort
1 = answers question, shows some understanding of material
2 = answers question, shows full understanding of material
3 = answers question, shows full understanding of material, relates answer to life experiences

Final Project

The final project is due on April 10, 2018. The final project has two parts, and your grade will be used in selecting the winner of the Certificate of Distinction.

Part One: Essay

You will be given a short video to watch and will then write an essay connecting the video to the six pillars of leadership.

Part Two: YouTube Video

You will create a short YouTube video that speaks to your experience in the Peres Leadership Program and what you have learned from it.

Dress Code

In order to maintain decorum, we kindly request you dress in business casual attire at all meetings. For boys, slacks and a button-down shirt are appropriate.. For girls, slacks or longer length dresses/skirts and no bare shoulders please.

Mentors

A major part of Peres is our amazing team of mentors who are all community members that are highly successful leaders in their fields. They each kindly volunteer their valuable time to lead a group of students at Peres. At each meeting mentors will discuss the pillars of leadership and how these pillars have applied to their success. Their experiences and opinions may be very valuable to your future success as a leader. Please take advantage of this relationship with your mentor. Mentors will give you their contact information and preferred means of communication. A few suggestions: You may want to seek advice from them as an objective third party, ask for their opinion on current events, or ask for help furthering a cause that is important to you. The more you invest in this relationship, the more you can gain from it.
